The tar sands are massive deposits of a dense and extremely viscous form of petroleum. It is turned into oil through a complex and energy-intensive process that causes widespread environmental damage. This ad puts the issue into perspective and helps Greenpeace spread awareness about the tar sands and motivate others to think about the environment.

The greenhouse effect is a process that occurs when gases in Earth's atmosphere trap the Sun's heat. This process makes Earth much warmer than it would be without an atmosphere. Human activities are changing Earth's natural greenhouse effect. Burning fossil fuels like coal and oil puts more carbon dioxide into our atmosphere. Perhaps the biggest, most obvious effect is that glaciers and ice caps melt faster than usual.
